When Brazilian architect PAULO MENDES DA ROCHA designed his iconic Paulistano Armchair in 1957, he imagined a piece of furniture that could evolve over the course of time.

160over90 was asked by Design Within Reach, the high-end furniture retailer specializing in distinctive modern design furnishings, to create a limited-edition redesign of the classic chair. Drawing on the idea that "Optimism is the New Black," the design employs black-and-white "calligraphitti," a mash-up of calligraphy and grafitti that was featured in store graphics and displays, as well as events hosted at Design Within Reach.

When communication design and product design meet, amazing things happen!
