Abbiamo chiesto a dieci designer italiani di dire la loro sul design, chiedendo risposta a un paio di domande sul prossimo Salone del Mobile di Milano, in programma dall'8 al 13 aprile.

La natura del design è questione dibattuta da sempre ma oggi, quando dal cake al web, passando per il food e il fashion, tutto sembra essere di design, la faccenda si fa quanto mai attuale. L'uso (e l'abuso) frequente di questo termine ha origine in fenomeni sociali quali l'estetizzazione del reale e la super valorizzazione della creatività come soluzione alla crisi dei valori tradizionali e dell'economia: forma, sintesi e differenziazione sono, a nostro avviso, le parole d'ordine del mondo 2.0

I designer selezionati ci accompagneranno al Salone del mobile di Milano con le loro riflessioni, una alla settimana, attraverso la più sintetica e 2.0 delle formule: il Tweet.

Kuno Prey (San Candido, 1958) è designer e professore universitario. Innovatore nel campo del design, come in quello della formazione, nel 1993 Prey ha contribuito al lancio e allo sviluppo della Facoltà della Gestaltung della Bauhaus-Universität a Weimar, dove ha insegnato Product Design. Nel 2002 Prey ha fondato la nuova Facoltà di Design e Arti alla Libera Università di Bolzano, di cui è stato Preside fino al 2010. Ha collaborato con diverse aziende, tra cui Alessi, per le quali ha disegnato vari prodotti acclamati a livello internazionale e insigniti di numerosi premi. I suoi progetti di grande successo sono caratterizzati da una ricerca profonda sui nuovi materiali e sulle nuove tecnologie.

A proposito del Salone ci rivela di voler vedere: "una coscienza del giusto più che del gusto. come giusto intendo onesto, utile e durevole. oltre a questo spero di rivedere molti amici e colleghi che quotidianamente si battono per una cultura del progetto."

e inoltre ci dice di voler evitare "troppe proposte trendy o direttamente inutili, che rischiano solo di disorientare."

Francesco Faccin è allievo di Enzo Mari. Dal 2004  sviluppa progetti auto-producibili in piccola serie, lavorando a fianco di artigiani e coltivando preziose collaborazioni. Nel 2010 vince il Design Report Award. è docente accademico, espone in Triennale  e collabora con aziende e Ong Italiane e straniere come Tod’s, Saeco, Danese, Miniforms, Bolia, Valsecchi1918, Officinanove, Liveinslums oltre a svolgere costantemente lavoro di ricerca.

A proposito del Salone ci rivela: "Vorrei vedere che tanti prendono posizioni radicali, coraggiose che mi facciano intravedere nuovi campi di progetto. Suggestioni e idee che facciano presagire che le cose stanno cambiando."

e inoltre ci dice "Non vorrei vedere in fiera quella distesa di stand grandi come cattedrali, anacronistici e insostenibili emblemi dell'incapacità di molte aziende di attirare l'attenzione semplicemente con l'intelligenza e la qualità dei progetti."

Forse sta anche a noi premiare con la nostra attenzione e il nostro apprezzamento il buon lavoro, invece del buffet gratuito offerto da alcune aziende in fiera...

Carlo Contin si occupa di industrial design, artigianato ed architettura d'interni.Partecipa a diverse edizioni del Salone Satellite e nel 2010 La Triennale di Milano gli dedica una mostra monografica.Tra i suoi clienti: Coop Italia, Cappellini, Fambuena, Guzzini, Le Fablier, Legnoart, Meritalia, the Museum of Modern Art MoMA New York, Ravarini Castoldi, Slamp e Sphaus, Mogg.

Lo interroghiamo: "Cosa vorresti vedere al prossimo Salone del Mobile?" e "cosa non vorresti invece vedere?"

Ci confessa candidamente: "Mi auguro tanto che esploda la primavera e ci sia un bellissimo sole! Il resto verrà da sé."

e ammette "Non vorrei vedere gente che viene a Milano solo per vedere il design e poi non è mai stata a Sant'Ambrogio o all'Orto Botanico o al Cenacolo."

Forse la primavera è davvero alle porte perchè le risposte di Contin ci fanno sorridere e ci augurano il meglio per quest'edizione del Salone sempre più vicina.

Laura Fiaschi -designer e grafica- e Gabriele Pardi -architetto- sono Gumdesign: architettura, industrial design, grafica, art direction per aziende ed eventi. Ricevono numerosi premi nazionali e internazionali; con Swing e i loro Calici Emozionali vengono chiamati a partecipare a numerose mostre e eventi, da parte della Triennale di Milano, di Dyade, del Moma di San Francisco. Collaborano con diverse università e riviste  di settore.

Indovinate cosa abbiamo chiesto loro? "Cosa vorreste vedere al prossimo Salone del Mobile?" e "cosa non vorreste invece vedere?"

Ci raccontano: "La parola che vorremmo ritrovare ad ogni angolo di Milano è "ricerca"; un termine troppo spesso dimenticato dal mondo del design che mira spesso al prodotto commerciale, privo di contenuti concettuali ed emozionali. Una parola difficile da raggiungere perchè faticoso è il percorso che vi porta, ricco però di esperienze umane e di impegni incrociati... un percorso necessario per la crescita culturale del paese Italia."

Sono invece stanchi delle "feste distribuite sempre più nel fuorisalone che nascono con la scusa del "design" ma che al contrario nascondono superficialità e mancanza di contenuti culturali."

Siamo alla quinta intervista e tutti i designer insistono nel reclamare un design di contenuti. Quando il design si è svuotato di significato? Da quanto tempo ci accontentiamo della forma senza la sostanza? Come abbiamo fatto a non accorgercene prima?

Brian Sironi è Compasso d’Oro nel 2011 con la lampada Elica, che si aggiudica numerosi altri riconoscimenti:  premio Design dello Stupore (2009), l'IF Gold Award (2010), il Good Design Award (2011), il Red Dot Design Award (2011). Ha costruito il suo percorso professionale tra Stati Uniti e artigianato locale in Brianza dove tuttora vive e lavora.

A lui toccano le nostre domande: "Cosa vorresti vedere al prossimo Salone del Mobile?" e "cosa non vorresti invece vedere?"

E Brian ci risponde: "Mi piace immaginare un'atmosfera di fine crisi, positiva e carica di energia, con tanti imprenditori coraggiosi che si buttano in nuove sfide, scommettendo sull'innovazione in ogni senso: tecnologica, ambientale, culturale e sociale."

e "Non vorrei più vedere la fiera della vanità, dell'inutilità e dello spreco. La provocazione fine a stessa, la smania di sorprendere, la quantità senza qualità, le logiche di marketing selvaggio non sono solo insostenibili, ma anche - e soprattutto - noiose." 

Quindi un Design di sostanza, supportato da un mercato più audace che non fa del marketing frivolo il suo unico strumento. Dobbiamo cambiare sia il modo di fare design che quello di vendere il design? Attendiamo le altre risposte.

Andrea Maragno, aka Joe Velluto, menzione d’onore nel 2011 dalla giuria internazionale del XXII Premio Compasso d’Oro ADI, vanta illustri collaborazioni, tra cui quella con Oliviero Toscani nel 2011. Attualmente JoeVelluto (JVLT) collabora con alcune realtà editoriali e svolge attività di coordinamento artistico.

Gli rivolgiamo la fatidiche domande: "Cosa vorresti vedere al prossimo Salone del Mobile?" e "cosa non vorresti invece vedere?"

Le sue risposte: "Mi piacerebbe vedere più speranza nei progetti, più curiosità e meno banalità finalizzate al facile commercio".

e "Vorrei non vedere "fuffa" fine a sé stessa, come non vorrei vedere sperimentazioni senza senso". 

Anche per Joe Velluto il design deve spazzolarsi via un po' di inutile "polvere di stelle" dalla spalle e tornare ad un approccio più profondo e di spessore.

Seguono i pensieri di  Paolo Ulian, industrial designer di spicco e allievo di Enzo Mari. Ulian è il vincitore della prima edizione del Design Report Award nel 2000,premio Dedalus nel 2002 e designer per Droog, Fontana Arte, Luminara, Zani e Zani, BBB Bonacina, Sensi&C., Coop, Azzurra Ceramiche, Skitsch.

Anche a lui chiediamo: "Cosa vorresti vedere al prossimo Salone del Mobile?" e "cosa non vorresti invece vedere?"

Le sue risposte: "Delle buone idee, dove non conta l'apparenza formale ma l'essenza  dei contenuti. Vorrei vedere, come dice  Enzo Mari,  "oggetti che sono, non oggetti che sembrano".

e "Non vorrei più vedere un certo design di tendenza, così vuoto e superficiale, utile solo ad alimentare le tasche degli imprenditori e le discariche dopo il suo brevissimo ciclo di vita". 

Ulian auspica il ritorno di quel design che non è decorazione d'ambiente bensì prodotto denso di significato e di dignità propria.

Il primo a pronunciarsi è Matteo Ragni, eccellenza del design italiano da quasi vent'anni. Ragni è designer, art director, architetto e docente in diverse università internazionali. Compasso d’Oro nel 2001, vince il Wallpaper Design Award nel 2008.

Gli chiediamo: "Cosa vorresti vedere al prossimo Salone del Mobile?" e "cosa non vorresti invece vedere?"

Lui ci risponde: "Vorrei vedere sorrisi su facce di tutti i colori"

e "non vorrei vedere Mobiletti  figli di memoria breve o/e di malafede". 

Un accenno allo spirito di festa che, ogni anno sempre più, colora la manifestazione e una riflessione sui suoi contenuti non sempre "freschissimi".

We asked ten Italian designers to express their own opinion about Design, as  a response to a couple of questions about the next edition of the Salone del Mobile of Milan, that will take place from 8th to 10th April.

The nature of design has always been a debated issue, but today, when from cake to web, from food to fashion, everything seems to be "of design", it's really a living matter. The frequent  use (and abuse) of this term has its origin in wider social phenomena such as the aestheticization of reality and the super-exploitation of creativity as a saving factor from the economic crisis and from that of traditional values​​: form, synthesis and differentiation are, in our opinion, the keywords of the World 2.0

The selected designers will lead us to the Milan Design Week with their reflections, one pro week, through the most concise and 2.0 of the formulas: the Tweet.

The first one answering is Matteo Ragni, one of the most influential italian Designers of the lasts twenty years. He is a Designer, Art Director, Architect and Teacher in different international universities. He won the Compasso d’Oro in 2001, and the Wallpaper Design Award in 2008.

We asked him: "What would you like to see at this edition of the Salone del Mobile of Milan?" and "What instead wouldn't you like to see?".

And he answered: "I'd like to see smiles on faces of many different colors" and "I woudn't appreciate certain furnitures that come from a lack of memory or from disloyalty".

Ragni refers to the party vibe that sorrounds -every year more- the event and to its contents, not always actually fresh and new.

Then come Paolo Ulian's thoughts, top italian industrial designer and Enzo Mari's apprentice. Ulian won the first edition of the Design Report Award in 2000, the Dedalus Prize in 2002 and works for italian and international design Companies such as Droog, Fontana Arte, Luminara, Zani e Zani, BBB Bonacina, Sensi&C., Coop, Azzurra Ceramiche, Skitsch .

We asked him the same questions:"What would you like to see at this edition of the Salone del Mobile of Milan?" and "What instead wouldn't you like to see?".

His answers: "any good ideas, where the the content wins over the appearance. I would like to see, such as Enzo Mari says, objects that are and not objects that just appear".

and "I wouldn't see anymore that hip design, so empty and superficial, that only feeds the pockets of producers and goes to trash after its short life cycle". 

Ulian wishes the return of a kind of design that is not a decoration but a real product, full of meaning and dignity.

The third Tweet comes from Andrea Maragno, aka Joe Velluto, honorable mention in 2011 by the international jury of the XXII Compasso d'Oro ADI, has been working with and for illustrious people and companies, including Oliviero Toscani in 2011. Currently JoeVelluto (JVLT) collaborates with some publishing realities and works as artistic coordinator. 

We address him with the big questions: "What would you like to see at the next Salone del Mobile?" and "What would you rather not see?"  

He answers: "I'd like to see more hope in the projects, more curiosity and less platitudes aimed at easy trade." 
and "I don't want to see "crap" with no sense, as well I don't want to see meaningless experiments." 
Also in Joe Velluto's opinion it's necessary to remove from design the unuseless "stardust" and return to a deeper approach.

Brian Sironi won the Compasso d’Oro ADI in 2011 with the Elica lamp, that receives also many others awzrds:  Design dello Stupore award (2009), l'IF Gold Award (2010), Good Design Award (2011), Red Dot Design Award (2011).  He grew up professionally among the USA and the local artisans of Brianza (Italy), region where he currently lives and works.

Here come the questions: "What would you like to see at the next Salone del Mobile?" and "What would you rather not see?"  

Brian tells us: "I like to figure out an end-of-the-crisis moment: positive and full of energy, with lots of corageus enterpreneurs who accept new challenges, betting on a real innovation, that is technological, environmental, cultural and social."

and "I don't want to see again a vanity fair, where unuselessness and waste rule. Vain provocations, "surprise at any costs", quantity with no quality, wild marketing strategies that are unsustainable and -first of all- boring"

So meaningful design, supported by a more corageus market that doesn't use marketing frills. Should we change both the way to make design and the way to communicate and sell it? Hope to reading new answers soon.

Laura Fiaschi -designer and graphic designer- and Gabriele Pardi -architect- are, together,  Gumdesign: architecture, industrial design, graphics, art direction for companies and events. They have been rewarded several times; with Swing and their Emotional Glasses they have been invited  to take part in many shows and events, by Triennale Milano, Dyade, Moma San Francisco. Guess what we asked them? "What would you like to see at the next Salone del Mobile?" and "What would you rather not see?"  

They told us: "The word we would like to find everywhere in Milan is "Research"; a term actually almost forgotten by the Design world that too often links to the mainstrem product, lacking of conceptual and emotional contents. To reach that very difficult word you need to make many efforts that are though also life experiences and points of touch...the culture of Italy needs this kind of path to grow."

While they are very annoyed by "Parties everywhere through Fuorisalone that uses Design as excuse to superficiality and lack of cultural meanings."

Here we are with the fifth interview and all the designers are demanding a meaningful Design. When did it happen that Design got empty of contents? How long have we been just pleased by a Design of mere appearance? Why didn't we get aware of that before?

He candidly confesses: "I hope so much that Spring comes and a beautiful sun shines! Everything else will come by itself." 
 
and admits: "I do not want to see people who come to Milan just to see "Design" and then has never been to St. Ambrose or to the Botanical Gardens or has never seen the Last Supper." 
 
Maybe spring is really nearly upon us because the answers by Contin make us smile and are a sort of "good luck" for this edition -closer and closer- of the Salone.

Francesco Faccin was a student of Enzo Mari. In 2004 he started developing self-producible projects in small series, working along with artisans and nurtuting valuable partnerships. In 2010 he won the Design Report Award. He is a university lecturer, exhibited at the Triennale di Milano and collaborates with Italian and foreign companies and NGOs such as Tod's, Saeco, Danese, Miniforms, Bolia, Valsecchi1918, Officinanove, Liveinslums. He furthermore goes constantly on with his researches.


About the Salone he reveals : " I would like to see many people making such radical and brave decisions, able to open new scenarios. Ideas and a lot of immagination spreading a wind of change."


and also said, "I would not like to see at the Fair cathedral-like stands, anachronistic and unsustainable that are the examples of the inability of many companies to attract attention simply by offering quality products. "


Maybe it's also on us to give our attention and appreciation to the good work, rather than to the free buffet offered by some big companies...

Kuno Prey (b. 1958 in San Candido) is a designer and a teacher, and an innovator in the field of the design as well as in that of education. He contributed in 1993 to the launch and the development of the Faculty of Art and Design of the Bauhaus-Universität in Weimar, where he was appointed Professor of Product Design. In 2002 Prey founded the new Faculty of Design and Art at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, that he guided as Dean until 2010. He works as consultant for design and research in many companies, such as Alessi, for which he designed various projects that earned him international acclaim. His highly successful products and projects, that won many awards, are characterized by a deep research on new materials and new technologies.

About the 2014 edition os the Salone del Mobile he reveals he wanted to see "a consciousness of what is right rather than of good taste. that means honest, useful and durable. Besides that he hope to meet many friends and colleagues who daily strive for a culture of design." 
 
He also says that he would like to avoid "too trendy or useless ideas, which are only confusing."
